Sweet Breams began in 2008 as a teeny-tiny contemporary taiyaki-ya, a dessert shop focusing on chibi taiyaki: delicious, soft and spongy, Japanese snack-sized fish-shaped cakes filled with premium ingredients. Chibi taiyaki are meant to be enjoyed hot off the griddle, therefore all of our chibi taiyaki are made to order from scratch and without the use or aid of preservatives or stabilizers. Each chibi taiyaki is filled with one of our signature fillings: azuki (red bean), vanilla cream custard, chocolate cream custard, Nutella, or the Catch of the Week (specialty flavour).
We’re devoted to experimenting with exotic flavors and concepts. As part of our Catches of the Week, we have offered several types of batter (choco, gingerbread, poppyseed), and fillings such as Chicken 'n' Waffles and Blueberry Cheesecake. All of our batters and fillings are made in fresh daily and in small batches. We follow self-developed recipes and use only the finest quality ingredients such as Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon vanilla and Guittard chocolates.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we do our very best to minimize your wait time. For optimal reheating at home, please place your taiyaki in a toaster oven at 350F for 5 to 7 minutes.
Now in our third year, we have grown to include a gallery and retail space. We carry items that delight and inspire us including: apparel, home goods, designer toys, art, printed matter, plush and other bits of awesomeness that are modern, hip, and a bit harder to find from a variety of local and independent sources. As most of the products we carry are available in limited quantities, our shop is always changing, which adds to the fun and whimsy of our space.
Sweet Breams collaborates with local artists to create unique exhibits. We currently have two resident artists, Cat Oshiro and Andrew Uy, whose work we showcase year round. Sweet Breams is a super kid-friendly place, and therefore, we keep our art PG (no nudity, no violence, no blood + gore, etc.). If you are interested in displaying your artwork as part of future exhibitions, please email us at info@sweetbreams.com with examples from your portfolio.
We are proud to be a part of the downtown San Mateo community, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sweet Breams would not exist if it were not for hard work, perseverance, and our incredibly supportive customers.
We accept Visa and Mastercard. There is a $10 minimum for credit cards.
